Styles and options

What We Build in Wood

Most wood fences we build are privacy fences around a backyard. Six feet is the usual height, eight feet is available, and shorter picket styles mark a boundary without a wall. Your town or HOA may limit the height, so we sort that out at the walk.

See our fencing contractor in Lexington and Blythewood fence installation pages. Related reading: what a wood privacy fence costs in Lexington and how to fence a sloped yard.

Standard privacy

Solid boards side by side, with a dog ear or flat top.

Shadowbox

Boards alternate on each side of the rails, so the fence looks finished from both sides.

Board on board

Overlapping boards that hide the gaps when the wood dries.

Cap and trim

A top cap and trim board give a cleaner, framed look.

Arched or scalloped top

A curved top line for a softer look.

Spaced picket

Open pickets for a garden, a front yard or a boundary.

Questions

Wood Fence Questions

How tall can a wood privacy fence be?

Most are six feet, and we also build eight foot privacy fences. Your town or HOA may limit the height, so tell us early and we will plan around it.

What is the difference between shadowbox and board on board?

Shadowbox alternates the boards on each side of the rails, so air passes through and both sides look finished. Board on board overlaps the boards so there are no gaps to see through.

Does a wood fence need staining?

It does not have to, but wood is a natural material and sealing or staining helps protect it from sun and rain. Ask us at the estimate what to expect.

Can you build on a slope or around trees?

Yes. We build on sloped yards and around trees and shrubs, and we walk the site in person before we quote it, so surprises get solved before you sign anything.

What warranty comes with a wood fence?

A one year workmanship warranty and a tune up visit in the first year. Manufacturer warranties on materials pass through to you, and coverage applies to the original purchaser.

Do I need a permit?

Permits are the homeowner's job, and the contract says so. If your town or HOA wants a permit, a drawing or an approval first, tell us early and we will plan the schedule around it.
